Since its inception in 2012, the Department of Neurosurgery at Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital (KMCTH) has grown into a leading tertiary care and training center for neurosurgery in Nepal. Certified by the Medical Education Commission (MEC) to offer MCh training in neurosurgery, it is one of the few centers in the country authorized to provide this advanced course.
Our team of highly experienced faculty—two professors and two associate professor—works alongside specialists in neurology, neuro-intervention, intensive care, and psychiatry to deliver comprehensive care for neuro-trauma, cerebrovascular diseases, neuro-oncology, spinal conditions, and more. We offer cutting-edge services such as functional neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery, skull base surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, and minimally invasive procedures. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology including the Zeiss Kinevo 900 microscope, Medtronic Stealth Neuronavigation system, and Cavitronic Ultrasonic Aspirator, our department is at the forefront of neurosurgical innovation in the region.
As pioneers, we’ve been the first in Nepal to perform many complex surgeries and introduce new services in the neurosurgical field. With a dedicated hybrid neurosurgical skills lab, we provide hands-on training in micro-neurosurgery, endoscopic, and exoscopic techniques, alongside cadaveric training. The department has hosted over 50 on-site training programs and short courses, covering a wide range of topics from operative techniques to clinical applications like ultrasound use in ICU and neurosurgical operations.
